The human microbiome is a diverse community of microorganisms -- including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea -- residing across various body sites, with the gut microbiota being the most studied. These microbial consortia are essential to host physiology, aiding digestion, synthesizing key metabolites, modulating immune responses, and preventing pathogen colonization.
Advances in metagenomics and metabolomics have elucidated the microbiome's involvement in numerous diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), metabolic disorders (e.g. type 2 diabetes and obesity), autoimmune conditions, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. The underlying mechanisms involve microbiota-mediated modulation of immune responses, production of bioactive metabolites, and alterations in intestinal barrier integrity. These insights have prompted the development of microbiome-based therapeutic strategies, including probiotics, prebiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and small-molecule interventions aimed at restoring microbial homeostasis.
Microbiome biomarkers have emerged as powerful tools for disease diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. These biomarkers provide insights into host-microbe interaction, disease etiology, and microbial metabolic pathways that contribute to pathological processes.
