Recombinant human Noggin, expressed in engineered human cells, belongs to the Noggin protein family. It has a primary structure consisting of an acidic amino-terminal and a cysteine-rich carboxyterminal. In mammals, Noggin is expressed primarily in the central nervous system. Noggin binds to and inactivates bone morphogenetic proteins including BMP-2, BMP-4 and BMP-7, preventing the activation of BMP receptors. Noggin is essential for proper skeletal development and enhances the survival and induces the growth of nerve and muscle cells.
