Recombinant human interleukin 12 (IL-12), expressed in engineered human cells, is a heterodimeric glycoprotein with subunits p35 and p40 cysteine-linked by a disulfide bond. The p40 dimer can bind to IL-12 receptor and antagonizes IL-12. Most cell types express the p35 chain, while the p40 chain is restricted to dendritic cells, B-cells and cells of macrophage/monocytes lineage. IL-12 is produced by macrophages and B-lymphocytes and is induced by both innate and adaptive immune responses. IL-12 may induce T-cell proliferation towards the Th1 phenotype.
