Recombinant human hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), expressed in engineered human cells, is a glycosylated monomer. HGF synthesis is initiated by injuries affecting liver tissues such as hepatitis; and is a mitogen for hepatocytes in primary culture and for kidney epithelial cells and may lead to the formation of tubular structures in growing epithelial cells. HGF synchronizes its activity with GM-CSF to stimulate colony formation of hematopoietic progenitor cells in vitro and stimulates the growth of human melanoma cells.
