Recombinant human GM-CSF, expressed in engineered human cells, belongs to the IL-2 protein family. GM-CSF is produced by a number of different cell types, including activated T-cells, B-cells, mast cells and endothelial cells. GM-CSF is required to develop neutrophilic colonies in vitro and GM-CSF synergizes with EPO in the proliferation of erythroid and megakaryocytic progenitor cells. GM-CSF promotes myeloid differentiation and generates granulocytes (basophils, neutrophils and eosinophils) and macrophage colonies. GM-CSF triggers irreversible differentiation of myeloblasts and monoblasts and also increases the phagocytic capability of macrophages.
